My students need S.T.E.M materials to help reinforce math and science concepts.

My Students
A day in the life of a first grader at our school, includes silliness, curious questions, writing stories, practicing using our manners, brilliant ideas, dance parties, listening to our favorite authors and hard work. They enjoy spending time outside, learning through play and fostering friendships that will carry them through their educational career at our K-8 school. Hands-on learning and integrating technology into their skill building and projects excites them as learners.
Our energetic group of students enjoys learning using hands on, whole group methods.
They are movers and shakers and enjoy a variety of work areas, tools, dividers, seating choices and movable work surfaces. These tools help increase their focus, provides them with movement as they work and helps them feel accomplished and successful.
My Project
Our students need math manipulatives to practice geometry concepts, number recognition, addition and subtraction facts, symmetry and build their number sense. Students will use these materials to creatively build, which will deepen their knowledge of concepts. Pattern blocks are a favorite in first grade, we need to add to our collection to support students working during math work places. Student will use ten-frame boards to help practice addition and subtraction facts. We work on adding within ten fluently to help build a solid number sense among our students. Our students will explore chain reactions using the Lakeshore Learning Kit. We want to foster S.T.E.M learning using hands on activities. Our goal is to grow our collection of S.T.E.M materials over the next few years and align our materials to match the Next Generation Science Standards.
Students minds grow when they have the opportunity to work creatively with math and science manipulatives.
In our world today students need to be able to think outside of the box to solve daily problems. By asking students to solve problems creatively using a variety of S.T.E.M materials we are providing them with a chance to approach problem solving in a new and exciting way.
