It All Begins With ABC's: A Preschoolers Journey To Reading

My students need a variety of ABC books, beginning and ending sound games, a set of Literature-Based Learning Centers, 20 write-and-wipe lapboards, and other writing tools to build necessary skills in literacy, vocabulary, and writing.

My Students

Have you ever seen the sparkle in the eyes of a child who has just learned the first letter in their name? Each year I have four year olds that come into my classroom without that sparkle in their eye. Each year, I struggle to find enough materials to teach kids the joy of learning their ABC's.

My students come from a small rural community in Oklahoma.

Most of my students have parents that work and struggle to provide basic needs and look to the school to provide materials to teach their child. Our school was built in the 1900's and the school district struggles to maintain the building and to provide new and updated materials for the classroom. It has been several years since we have gotten new games and hands-on tools.

My Project

With your help, my entire class will have access to new games that teach beginning and ending sounds of words. The students will be given hands-on tools such as a complete set of dry erase boards to teach letter recognition and formation. My students will be able to play with colorful age-appropriate games that make learning the alphabet fun and engaging. I will not only be able to teach all 20 students at one time, but these materials will extend our daily activities into small groups. These small groups will give students one-on-one time with me, their teacher. My students will grow in their knowledge of letters, letter sounds, words, and more importantly the English language.

As a preschool teacher, it all begins with me.

I realize that I am shaping the future of our community, state, nation, and world. I realize that everything begins with ABC's. If a child cannot read, then they cannot do anything else. Education starts with the basic foundation of reading. With your donation, I will not only be able to teach my current students, but my students in the future. They will go from reading and writing to arithmetic and the world.
