My Students

I teach a class of delightful first graders. My students are highly engaged and motivated to learn. It is important to find fun and interactive activities for them! My students perform at a wide range of levels. I have students who are English as Second Language learners, students with learning disabilities, and students who need enrichment. The students in my classroom come from a variety of cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Giving students manipulatives to learn by hands on activities and exploration helps students to develop concrete concepts that can be applied to abstract concepts.

It is important that I provide my students with as many hands-on activities and experiences as I can to help them to master concepts. This project will give my students a variety of manipulatives that can be used for students to learn, practice, and master key math concepts.

My Project

This project will provide my students with manipulatives that can be used for interactive, hands on games to learn and practice new math skills. Math has many abstract concepts and it is important to provide students with concrete connections in order to move into the abstract thinking required for mastery of concepts. This project contains a variety of dice that can be used for a variety of game and number concept activities. The students enjoy using dice as a way to practice number skills and math computation. My students will be able to use the monkey to better understand how numbers relate to each other (comparing values) and understanding how numbers can be combined to equal larger numbers. My students will be able to use the card game to practice math facts for fluency. The greater than less than manipulatives will help my students to remember the symbols used to compare the value of numbers. Learning how to use a number line to solve math equations is a new strategy for first graders. Having a magnetic number line will help my students to practice using a number line to help them to accurately solve equations using this strategy.
