My Project
I am a New York City public school educator, and next year is going to be my first year back as a classroom teacher in over a decade. I am a part of a district that is a cohort of many schools across our city and has the highest amount of special needs students. Our district is specifically designed to educate students with disabilities. My students have Autism and need hands-on materials to learn. My students are also economically disadvantaged. Our district works a 12-month program, so it is essential to have appropriate educational materials and curriculum to support them and meet their individualized learning needs.
Students often come to us with many struggles, so learning needs to be fun, engaging, hands-on, and multi-sensory to best support them in acquiring skills.
I want to see how my students can learn and grow but to do that they need materials we don't have in the classroom.
Many times, students come into classrooms and struggle with math, especially mathematics can be an abstract concept for students with disabilities. Math is like a foreign language. It is hard to pick up the concepts when you need a variety of supports and visuals to learn. The Find The Number Activity Center, Touch and match sensory cards and the Flip & Solve Boards that I have chosen are to support students learning math concepts. They will also support their center-based learning activities in which they get to work hands-on and explore various math concepts.
Your support with this project will set my students on the path to mathematic achievement.
