My Students

Each day during the school year, I am fortunate to spend the day with a group of energetic, curious, loving and eager first-grade students. Their greatest gift is their genuine passion to explore all the possibilities this world has to offer them. They are honest and trusting, believing that I, as their teacher, will do everything I can to give them every possible opportunity to maximize their potential for present and future success. From the first moment of each day, through to dismissal, they give all they have to make that day the best possible.

Our favorite class quote is "Let's make today a good day for a good day!" For many of my students, school is their comfort zone.

More than half of my students are living in low-income households, and the same percentage are first-generation U.S. citizens. They have watched how hard their parents work to provide them with a safe, comfortable home in a country that values freedom and imagination. As incredible as their young imaginations may be, sometimes hands-on materials are necessary to reinforce math and science concepts.

My Project

Plastic coins, pattern blocks, tangrams, dominoes, and place value models are an integral part of solidifying concepts in the early elementary years.

The State of California mandates that 1st grade students use manipulatives during math instruction.

Over the years, some are lost or damaged, and classroom sets need to be replaced. According to Stein and Bovalino (2001), “Manipulatives can be important tools in helping students to think and reason in more meaningful ways. By giving students concrete ways to compare and operate on quantities, such manipulatives as pattern blocks, tiles, and cubes can contribute to the development of well-grounded, interconnected understandings of mathematical ideas.”
