My Students
Remember the days of paper and pencil in the classroom? Chalkboards? Computer Lab was maybe once a week? Compare that to today where children as young as 10 have an iPhone. iPads are slowly taking the place of a computer. Technology is at a high, and its possibilities in the classroom are endless.
I have a class of 26 seven and eight year olds.
My students are eager to get their little hands on any technology, especially iPads. Many of them do have their own at home, however, several of them do not have access to these learning materials. Our school district is on a big technology push, giving iPads to students 3rd grade and up. They spent 2 full days of staff development devoted to ways our students can use iPads in the classroom. My school is a primary school, grades 4K to 2nd grade. Unfortunately, for the younger grades, we will have a few iPad carts to share among the entire school. This is an exciting addition, however, it limits the opportunities my students have to the iPads since we are all sharing.
My Project
With an extra iPad for student use, I could use the iPad as a student center. Students can create a book on a nonfiction topic they are researching with Story Creator. They can compete against each other by answering math facts with Math Fight. They can create a collage of shapes found around the school with Pic Collage. With so many learning and creation apps available, there's no limit on what they can do! They can review information learned in the classroom, but they can also apply what they know and have learned by creating different projects to share. It's also a great way to prepare them for the next year when they will have their own iPad. They will learn how to handle the device responsibly in the classroom, under my watchful eye, before they have the freedom to take their iPads home.
By just having one extra iPad available to stay in our classroom, it allows me the opportunity to add in more chances for students to use it.
Students get excited about "playing" on the iPads, and what they don't realize is that they are learning at the same time. Seeing them so excited to use this amazing tool motivates me to do what I can to make that happen as much as possible.
