This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a low-income/high poverty school located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Against all odds, our students are bright-eyed, gung-ho, innovators that continuously create powerful products. Nowhere is it more present than in our Tech Café.

Here, 6th-8th graders use low- and high-tech tools to create social action products.

Examples this semester include clay sculptures celebrating body positivity, embroidered personal strength quilts, and a documentary on combating stereotypes in the school. When you visit (please do!), you'll sense the buzz in the air as students excitedly and independently apply their creative minds.

My Project

Our school doesn't have a music teacher and it just so happens I love playing the electric guitar. Recently, a whole crew of 7th graders has shown up in my Makerspace at lunch itching to play my guitar. I only have one electric and some beat-up acoustics from the old music room. Long story short, we're making due. I bought a couple of beginner guitarist books and we sit in a circle handing the guitars around. But wouldn't it be amazing if they could each use their own during practice? I'd also love for a few to take them home over the weekend. I have a feeling this is going to lead to our first ever Island School Rock Band-- so stay tuned!
