Islamic Tiling Installation: Peace Education, Math and Art!

My students need contact paper and tape so they can study geometry, art, and Islamic tiling designs, to create huge tape and contact paper murals for our school.

My Students

Make math come alive, beautify our school, and increase intercultural understanding when you sponsor a geometry, art, and culture unit teaching about shapes, patterns, and the art of Islam. Students study art of North Africa and Spain while learning shapes and creating giant contact paper murals.

I teach in an urban, high poverty, largely African-American school system, at a special education center for emotionally disturbed elementary school students.

I am an art and ants integration teacher and our students learn best through hands-on experiences. I incorporate the elementary math, science, social studies and reading curriculum into my lessons to help students get excited about learning. We love creating large scale art to make our environment child-friendly. I choose materials that are forgiving of beginning learners and special education students, who may have shorter attention spans. My students have severe emotional and behavioral difficulties and need engaging projects scaffolded in manageable chunks to succeed. This particular project includes repositionable tape, contact paper pieces which can be fixed in advance. Students will learn math, social studies and art. I train other educators in my city so I would love to share the outcome of this project with teachers.

My Project

My students will study shapes, angles and patterns and using measurement and templates create shapes from contact paper. Students will tie into their heritage as they look at art from Northern Africa and Spain, and arrange the shapes into intricate patterns and designs after traditional Islamic tiling designs. Each student will have their own work to take home as well as collaborative projects that they create with their classmates, which will beautify our school hallways. Younger students will learn to identify shapes; older students will measure angles and analyze the tessellations. All of the students will learn about color, pattern, and art history! I am especially glad to teach about great civilizations of Africa, to instill pride in my students' heritage. We will also have a chance to discuss and dispel stereotypes about Islam, as the Muslim religion has influenced the development of these beautiful geometric tilings.
