Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend a public elementary Title I school with approximately 400 students. The student population consists of 24% are African American, 42% Latino/Mexican, 12% White and 1% Asian. 75% are economically disadvantaged and 34% are students with disabilities. Many are from foster and single-parent families.

I envision a bright future for them.

They are so bright and full of energy. I see great potential in my students while helping them prepare for what's ahead with many wonderful opportunities.

My Project

My students attend an inner city public school that consists of low-income families. Despite their home environment, they are very inquisitive and have a strong desire to learn. Interactive technology offers opportunities for students to explore, interact, experience, and learn both at school and home.

As the technology teacher, I love the features of Nearpod - an interactive slide show tool that engages students and promotes diverse lessons, UDL and VR features, collaboration and a translation tool for our ENL students.

The lesson library comes with many great resources such as SEL lessons that include mindfulness about COVID and racial justice. Pushing the envelope of technology, they have an immersive feature of Virtual Reality that the students can immerse themselves into the different locations, such as swimming in the ocean and looking at fishes and coral reefs. It brings another dimension to learning. They come in excited and ready to learn when they know it's a Nearpod day.

This resource can be used for connecting through diversity lessons, digital citizenship, as well as virtual field trips.

With a platinum membership, I will have access to all Nearpod lessons without any additional cost. With this access, I will be able to allow students to see themselves in the lessons that they complete at their own pace and demonstrate what they have learned by completing interactive activities that have translation tools and built in assessments. Some of these interactive activities include matching, filling in the blank, and even drawing examples of content knowledge that are universal design learning features for many grade bands.
