it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
To begin to describe my class and my students, I would first have to explain our learning environment and the obstacles that we have faced that brought me to this very moment. This will only be my second year as a Special Education Teacher in The South Bronx, however, it feels a lot like my first year in the sense that our learning environment is new and we still have obstacles in our path. My class received their instruction remotely all year last year and most of my students could not participate on a consistent basis due to the lack of resources. This school year, 2021-2022, I really want to take the approach of "Getting Things Done." I am currently teaching High School Special Education Grades 7-12. My class consists of 6 students who are in their teens and have a classification of Autism. These kids come into school everyday with a smile on their face, ready to learn. Their resiliency and their determination to learn is what motivates me everyday. They come from all different corners of this city and my kids are AWESOME! Really no other way to say it.
My Project
These iPads will make a HUGE difference in my students learning simply by them being available. My students are already very comfortable navigating iPads and related devices and having them in the classroom to support them and their creativity throughout the day, will enhance any idea and make lessons come to life. I truly feel that these devices will provide them the opportunity to stay connected and engaged to what they are learning and take control of how they learn.
As I teach during this pandemic, each student having their own device at their fingertips can make a lesson about our community much more personal and interactive.
Students can feel as if they are in control of their learning and scan a QR code that brings them directly to their tasked assignments. These materials will not leave the school building, they will stay in our classroom and students will be responsible for maintaining their device, keeping it clean and charging it. This, in turn, is a great skill for my students to have and it promotes independence and accountability.
