These are a group of enthusiastic inner-city kids who want to do something besides reading about science all year long.
I love seeing them get excited about going with me after school to study water or check out soil samples and test their home water in the classroom.
We were actually responsible for discovering that there was lead in our school water supply!
No one wanted to listen to me so students stayed after school to test the water and took actual samples down to the administrator to show her what we found.
Once she saw how passionate the kids were about this, she got people in our building to handle the situation! She kept mumbling about "the professionals said they checked" but they obviously didn't! These kids deserve every chance they can get!
My Project
Can you imagine trying to teach about water stewardship to someone who has never seen it anywhere outside of the kitchen tap? That's the job I do and I look for opportunities to enhance my knowledge and skills so that I can bring science out of the textbook and into the hands of tomorrow's citizens. I am a teacher who loves what she does and uses my own resources to make science come alive for my students. I have an opportunity to take two students along to share their research with students from around the world.
I need to pay for my own lodging through funding so I can get students there with my personal funds.
This is truly a lifetime opportunity for inner-city children and for myself as well. We will be collaborating with scientists and schools around the world and sharing our research and knowledge together. This helps to broaden our horizons and help us to realize how truly important it is to work together.
We will be working in Ireland's only national park and exploring many aspects that are important to our own local water. We can use this data to work on new projects, bring science to life, and build team skills by working with schools in other areas outside our own. You can help us do just that.
