My students need 2 computers with headphones! We current have very old computers with a free operating system that will not allow us to use or download current Autism software.
My students have issues sharing, getting along, waiting their turn, playing together, obeying rules, listening, and knowing personal space. I call my class WWF because they wrestle all day long. Help me get the technology needed to help them learn social skills in a fun, easy way.
My nine students with Autism live in high poverty neighborhoods, have challenging home lives, and struggle understanding that they have a disability.
They are a fun and lively group. Some of them have grade level academic skills and would be successful in General Education but their challenging behaviors are holding them back. Speaking of General Education, our school is a quaint little school that has a lot to offer the students. However my students' social skills make it hard for them to positively interact with the General Education students.
My Project
The students will use these computers and headphones to access the Teachtown computer software program to teach much needed skills. It is a program designed to teach students with disabilities. Students will learn many valuable social skills that will help them interact in and navigate the world around them. The program has several components. First there are videos that model and explain expected behavior in various situations. Then students practice and discuss the video in a whole group setting. The best part of the program is the computer sessions. In those sessions, students further develop learned skills through interactive activities and games on the computer. In addition to teaching social skills, the computer program also teaches language arts and math skills the students may need.
Having access to this computer software will have a HUGE impact on my students lives; in the classroom and at home.
They will learn how to be better citizens in the community. They will not just learn the skills but they will learn why the skills are important and how their actions affect others.
