Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello! I teach 4th grade students in the inner city. As is the rest of the nation, we are currently operating in very difficult economic times. I teach children who are impoverished, at-risk and who are struggling to learn another language.

This proposal is about books. As my title says, is there truly anything more exciting than a new book? I still treasure the memories of having new books to read in my life. A book is so powerful that it can transform you in so many ways. Our students do not have that luxury in their lives. For their families, simply putting food on the table or buying medicine or heating the house is a first priority. I have always realized that it is the school that must provide those book experiences. I have personally seen children who have never liked to read begin to love it based on exposure to beautiful books.

In my proposal I have asked for books on many different topics we will learn this year. Books about our state will beautifully accompany a geography/history unit (their very first time learning about geography/history!), books on popular TV shows will surely hook them, holiday books (a huge interest of children the age I teach) and science books to go with our beautiful first science topic this year: geology! I am already imagining the joy on my children's faces seeing these books I selected just for them!

Books are part of educated people's lives. They just are. It is routine for so many of us to stop at the bookstore on the way home or on the weekend to pick up a magazine or a book to spend time with. Yet, for so many of my students, they cannot. Books cost money. So this is simply not an option. Yet,a life without a love for books leads to a life that is not a literate one. Without that, the future does not look bright. Please help my students have the chance to read, touch, devour and learn from these beautiful books. I can assure you they are extremely humble and grateful and these books will truly make a difference in the literate future of our country. Thank you to everyone who is kind enough to consider this proposal! It is a beautiful thing you are doing.
