We are a rural, low-income school district surrounded by farmland, which many students live and work on.
Many of my students are tactile or kinesthetic learners who enjoy being able to get out of their desks, move around, work with their hands, experiment, and create things. I also have a unique group of learners with special needs who often require modified instruction to achieve success in our science class.
My Project
These lab kits and blood samples will help my students feel like real CSI detectives as they test various substances to determine which is really blood. Students will practice lab and safety skills that are important in medical offices, labs, clinics, and hospitals, preparing them for future careers in the medical field. They will also be using the same procedures used in real crime labs, preparing them for future careers in law enforcement. They will learn about the components of blood, its composition, different blood types, and other important properties that allow it to be used as crime scene evidence. They will also learn the difference between presumptive and confirmatory tests, and when each is used in the field or lab.
Forensic science has become a wildly popular class that allows me to teach students important life science concepts, but I need help from Donors Choose to make hands-on learning a reality.
Students simply understand the concept better and are more excited to learn when they are doing, instead of just watching, reading, or listening. These materials will help my students transform from simple observers to active participants as they assume the roles of scientists and detectives as they become more engaged in their own learning.
