Is My Water Safe?

My students need test strips to test the water quality of the campus pond, the creeks around school and a water sample brought from home.

This project is fully funded

A majority of my students do not understand that what they do every day affects the water around them. Our daily activity changes the quality of the water with which they come into contact. Many students do not have access to investigative labs that prepare them for college, so they have to look at data collected by someone else. These supplies will give students hands on experience to collect data and prepare the results. This will help prepare them for the college experience to collect their own data. These supplies are going to be used by 9th and 10th grade students that come from urban housing complexes and developments. Many of our students do not play outside and are unfamiliar with the natural world around them.

I am writing because our school was told that we have no budget for science supplies. I will need to buy these supplies from my own pocket.

We have out of date test strips or no test strips to conduct water quality tests. They will chart results on a grid map to discover patterns in water quality changes. If students can use a simple device, like test strips to check water quality, then compare their results with others, they will start to understand that the water is connected!

This project combines science, investigation, geography, civics, and more. After students determine the water quality from various sites, and compare the data, they can make suggestions to why their are differences and further investigate those questions.
