Mary Poppins was right...a spoonful of sugar does make the medicine go down! Even as adults the tiniest bit of novelty makes repetitive tasks more enjoyable and engaging. My kindergarten students need whiteboards to practice writing every day.
My students are 20 energetic, excited, and happy five-year-olds who come to school everyday ready to learn.
Our school is in a low income area so many of the children do not have access to varied writing experiences or materials at home. I want them to feel joy at the creative process of writing and pride in the ability to correctly form letters.
My Project
With the 3 types of lapboards I have requested, the 2 center organizers, and the mini erasers our class will be able to have 2 additional writing centers available every day. Students will be able to practice the mechanics of writing letters with correct proportions and spacing while others will be able to release their creativity as they write and illustrate stories and poems. The lapboards are engaging for the students as they love to use the varied colors of whiteboard markers and erase with the mini erasers. The markers glide over the mini whiteboards which makes writing easier for some little hands, especially those with developing fine motor skills. It is a fun and different way to practice.
I find that by providing these types of materials my students often want to use them at times of the day they might otherwise be allowed to play.
The lapboards will be used daily for many years to come!
