Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach math to students in an elementary dual language urban public school. About 70% of our students come from families in need. The student population represents children from a variety of cultural backgrounds and socioeconomic levels.

All of the children in my school are learning two languages- English and Spanish. All of the students are also expected to learn how to read, write and explain the language of mathematics. To be good in math, you have to learn a very specific vocabulary. It isn’t often that a child comes to school with words like mode, array or representation in his or her vocabulary. As soon as they master reading from left to right, they are asked to solve some equations from right to left or from top to bottom! They have learned the alphabet, but they must also learn to read the symbols that stand for is equal to or is greater than or is less than. For many students, the world of mathematics in the classroom is mysterious and even intimidating.

Reading books that incorporate a mathematical concept into a story is one way I am hoping to help students increase their proficiency in both reading and math. My goal is to provide them and their teachers with books and stories that connect the math they learn in the classroom to the world around them. I have already established a modest math library that is growing little by little. Students are enthusiastic about checking out books but often have questions such as: “Do you have more books with dinosaurs?” “Don’t you have another copy of Hamster Champs?” “Do you have any chapter books?” “Do you have some more books in Spanish?” “Can we both check out same book so we can read together?” Unfortunately, the answer is often no.

Your generosity will help make the answer to their requests a resounding YES! Students will share more books with more friends, more classmates and more siblings.
