This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a proud sixth grade teacher with an absolutely amazing class! I currently work in my hometown and I love it. However, the school I work for is a Title I school. It is located in an inner city where poverty and crime are high and resources are incredibly low. The majority of the items in my class, (from pencils, to a whiteboard, to my entire classroom library), were purchased by me at some point throughout the past four years.

My happy classroom provides a safe haven for my unique, diverse and inquisitive class.

My students have a natural love and curiosity for learning. I want to encourage them and find ways to foster a love of reading in all students. Although they might be young, they recognize the importance of their education and they are eager to learn more.

My students need the necessary supplies in order to build basic foundational skills. The engaging novel that I selected will allow students to master strategies needed to become independent readers. Please provide my students with the opportunity to access the tools they need to be successful! Today a reader, tomorrow a leader!

My Project

The book "Restart" by Gorman Kordon is an engaging book with a powerful lesson with relevant themes that my sixth graders could connect to.

"Is the person you are the person you are destined to be?" Such a question could be discussed throughout the novel as the main character tries to rediscover himself.

Chase, a jock and a bully with a bad reputation, falls off of a roof and wakes up with amnesia. He's given the opportunity to live, yet he doesn't remember who is he and how he used to be. Now that he is able to "Restart", he's set out to make a better name for himself and be the person he should have been.

Using great literature will help students build the confidence in their reading skills and reading comprehension strategies. By providing my class with a class set of books, we will be able to take part in great discussions as we work our way through powerful themes.
