My students need 10 cylindrical equal mass metal sets and 10 sets of density cubes.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Jutras's classroom raised $475
This project is fully funded
The school committee is requiring that all juniors in my school take chemistry; due to difficult financial times, the district has not been able to provide the necessary supplies. If it were not for the chemistry requirement, my students would have elected some other course. They, more than most students, need hands-on activities.
Scattered about several classrooms are various objects which have been used to study density. They either constitute portions of sets, are not pure substances, or were designed for other lab activities such as determination of specific gravity. Compounding these issues is the fact that there is an insufficient number of a wider range of "unknown" substances.
Density is a physical property of matter and is calculated using the formula: Density = mass/volume. Students could be given density problems to solve. However with these masses, students can be asked to apply their knowledge of this physical property to identify unknown substances. I would give my students the cylinders and the density cubes and ask them to identify them. They would then put the density formula into use by determining the mass and the volume (either V = L x W x H or by the water displacement method) of each unknown. They would calculate the density and compare their density to a chart of known substance densities.
You will make it possible for my students to understand that density is an important physical property of matter that can be used to identify unknown objects. This activity makes "density" as a property more tangible than ever would be possible by sitting at a desk and solving density problems.
