FULLY FUNDED! Ms. D'Amato's classroom raised $320
This project is fully funded
I am a second grade teacher at a Pre-K - 8 school in the East New York section of Brooklyn. All of my students receive free lunch.
A couple of weeks ago, in preparation for Columbus Day, I asked the class to tell me what they knew about Christopher Columbus. Nobody answered me. I then asked the students if Christopher Columbus was an actor, a basketball player, or if he was married to J-Lo. Thankfully, the students did find the humor in my questions, but they weren't any closer to suddenly remembering some information about Christopher Columbus they had stored in their memories.
This situation has made me see a need to have more holiday books available within my classroom. Normally if a holiday is approaching and I do not have a book within my classroom library for read-aloud, I will take one out of the library. This works fine, except in this situation the students cannot borrow the book overnight, as I don't want to risk having one of the kids lose a book that does not belong to us.
My students genuinely love to read. Almost all of my students borrow books from our classroom every single day to read at home. They are eager to learn, and I want to be able to provide them with all they need to become worldly individuals. While Christopher Columbus may be a somewhat controversial historical figure, I do believe it is important for the children to know why Columbus Day is a national holiday. They can continue to learn more about Columbus when they are older and will be able to form educated opinions about such topics. I would like my students to be as informed as possible so they may be fully prepared to meet the many challenges they will face in the years ahead.
Students need to be given information in order to become critical thinkers, and I just want to provide them with all I can so they may garner the skills that will make them successful adults.
In this proposal I am requesting a classroom library consisting of books on a variety of holidays. I am also requesting two non-holiday books, because I know my kids will absolutely LOVE them. They are Walter the Farting Dog and Alice the Fairy.
