Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the first time your parents let you use a camera? The excitement, the responsibility of using a tool used by grown-ups, just added to the mystery of how images were recorded. I want to empower my students to record their observations for our informational unit of study.
Our students come from a multiplicity of ethnicities and sociol-economic backgrounds.
They have eager, scientific minds, and they love to find answers to their real-life questions. As urban students, they are very aware of everything metropolitan, and greet each activity outside the realm of their experience with excitement and intrigue.
Our school is currently promoting the philosophy of project-based learning, as well as delving more deeply into utilizing informational texts to form persuasive arguments.
My Project
In line with gathering and synthesizing information, even at such an early age as four, having the means to utilize technology first-hand to both record and narrate their own experiences will encourage reluctant writers across the entire grade to become story-tellers or reporters for their class. Giving students this option, by providing digital camcorders, will promote participation and engagement, as the classes venture on several hands-on trips and as each observes their respective class pets. Ultimately, each class will produce a final product via the gathering of information and construct big books and individual books, as well as Power-Point presentations or short movie clips which demonstrate the use of nonfiction features as they showcase their knowledge.
For students to be interested in a topic, it has to hold special meaning for them.
For emergent readers and writers, difficult words or book structures may hold a special challenge that might deter them from actively participating in group or individual activities. Introducing alternate media for expression of ideas, such as camcorders, one for each classroom on the grade, offer new opportunities for success and will provide students with a feeling of empowerment, i.e.: "I made that video."
