iPods for Education

My Students

Is there an "app for that?" My students are aware of current technology and I want to be able to extend their classwork into that realm. I would love to have an iPod Touch for my class to help my students find appropriate apps to practice what we are learning in the areas of reading & math.

I have 27 fourth grade students that are rapidly increasing their technological efficiency.

They are highly inquisitive and would greatly benefit from an iPod Touch. This would enhance their science, math, and technological skills enabling them to be better prepared for the world. We are a middle income school with a diverse population located in northern California.

My Project

An example of how I am prepared to use the iPod Touch in my class is during reading aloud. My wonderful fourth graders are slowly increasing their fluency, but often fail to "hear" themselves read. With an iPod Touch students will be able to record stories and listen to them while building reading fluency. An iPod Touch for our classroom will also allow the students to use their reading skills and perform for their peers. I will also be able to identify age-appropriate apps which align closely with my students' abilities and state standards of learning. They will use the new apps to build not only their reading, but their math and science skills as well. Every single student will benefit as I can find apps which either challenge high-performing students, or reteach and re-mediate current concepts for struggling students. The students will also be able to extend their learning at home, as some of our families have access to iPod Touches.

We need to think of new ways to engage our children in learning.

With the explosion of technology outside the classroom, I am always looking for ways to connect what we are doing in class to current up-to-date "apps". With your gift of an iPod my students can begin to explore this technology to learn to love to read. I look forward to the day that I can tell students and parents looking for extra-work for their students that, "Yes, there is an app for that!"
