My Students
Do you remember learning to read? Your family probably spoke English and it might have been easy for you to transfer the words you had heard your entire life to learning to read.
I teach ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students and they do not have that advantage.
In their homes, English is not their first language. They speak their native language at home and then come to school expected to speak English and to learn to read in a language that is not familiar to them.
My Project
To help my students learn English, I would like to create take-home backpacks that have iPod Shuffles and read-along books. The students will take these backpacks home and listen to the stories using the iPods and the read-along books. When the students become familiar with the books, they can read the books to their families. As an added bonus, other family members will be able to also use the items in the backpacks. This could help my students’ parents to also learn English!
You can help my students (and their families) to learn English.
By providing funding for this iPod Shuffle backpack project, you will help me to create a resource for my students that will help them to be successful.
