My Students
Meeting the needs of ALL of my students is the biggest challenge, especially when it comes to teaching them to read. Teaching my reading lessons in small groups seems to be the best way to face this challenge, but then the challenge becomes how to engage the students when it is not their group time.
My students are all first graders in the state of South Carolina.
Our school is fairly large, with a population of almost 900. We are one of 9 First grade classrooms. The children are very well behaved and have a hunger to learn, especially when it comes to reading. They are always encouraging one another and celebrating each others' success.
My Project
In my classroom I teach reading to 3 different groups. The groups are leveled to meet the individual needs of the students and each group lasts 20 minutes. While I teach the other groups, I am constantly challenged to keep the students engaged in a learning activity. Using the iPod touch to listen to stories read aloud would be such a fun way for them to spend this time. They could follow along in the book and then hold a book talk with a buddy or create something to go along with the story in our creation center. The children finishing their tasks early could also return to these iPods to play an educational game from the app store.
Supporting this project with your donation would be putting technology directly into the hands of First grade students.
This technology would be used daily to enhance their learning experiences and make learning to read a fun and engaging part of our school day.
