This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Special education can be challenging but extremely rewarding. Especially if you teach in the South Bronx. My students come from a predominately low-income area and come from single-family households. 99% of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch based on their socio-economic backgrounds and 25% of those students are special needs. My students face a multitude of problems in our school. Lack of proper funding for books and other essential needs, growing up in a high crime high poverty neighborhood, and a general culture that doesn't put an emphasis on a strong education.
My students are highly energized and visual learners.
They love working on computers and using technology. In my classroom, I push my students to become job and college ready. Throughout the year we explore how to write resumes, balance checkbooks, plan a dinner party, use Microsoft Office, use Google Drive, and design a house, room or zoo. This way my students are ready for the real world at a young age.
My Project
Since my students are not in school they are losing some of the "normal" ways we are used to teaching. Creating real time anchor charts and displaying notes is something done daily in normal ELA lessons. Underlining text and annotating while emerging in a text really helped my students grasp the concepts we were learning. Since we went remote unfortunately those things are lost.
With an Apple Pencil I would be able to not only create real time anchor charts and notes with the students, but then be able to share digital copies with them.
This would also allow me to share classroom resources to students as an asynchronous way of learning. This would be a huge help for my special education students because they would be able to see me markup a text in real time. Please help make this a reality for my students.
