My students' disabilities vary, but the majority are 3-4 years behind their grade level. I use a variety of hands on learning, teacher made lessons, and various assessments to help them engage in learning.
My students are in a self-contained classroom for individuals with moderate to severe Autism in the grades of Kindergarten through third grade.
There are 3 girls and 2 boys in the classroom with a wide range of abilities. Each child is different in his or her interests, abilities, and difficulties but are learning to cope with their own unique needs. One student can only imitate one letter sound and another student will only repeat what he is exposed to on television. My other three students are very rote in their responses and produce 2-3 word utterances when expressing their needs, answering questions, and asking questions. Some days are harder than others, and multiple social, behavioral, and sensory needs block the way for their learning. My students are wonderful students who make me laugh daily, keep me on my toes, and make work the highlight of my day.
My Project
If my students had access to more technology, it would improve their ability to learn and speak drastically. The iPad offers many apps that assist children with Autism with deficits in communication, social skills, academics and many others! It will assist some of the lower functioning students with communicating their basic wants and needs, while also assisting higher functioning students with academics and social skills.
This project will give my students an ability to use a voice that has been hiding within them.
I can not imagine the excitement my students will have when they see how much they can communicate through the use of technology.
