My Students
Our school was severely damaged by Hurricane Harvey, so now we are housed at our local high school. Even before the hurricane, our students faced many adversities because of their low socioeconomic status. Many of my students' families had a difficult time meeting their daily basic needs. Despite my students' obstacles, they are great kids and still strive to be successful. Their efforts are many times thwarted because we don't have a variety of instructional materials available to us. Even with the lack of basic supplies, we still strive to be the best. Hurricane Harvey hit us, but it didn't kill us.
My Project
Help me be a better teacher for my students, given our circumstance. After Hurricane Harvey, my students need iPads and class tablets to enhance the math curriculum/instruction. We need technology like the iPads and Fire tablets, because my student's foundation in math are below standard and we need the technology for math applications to accelerate basic skills in mathematics. It’s very challenging to instruct children and expect them to give their best efforts when they do not have the basic necessities needed to complete daily assignments. We will use the iPads to project programs that will help simplify abstract topics into simple, easy to understand visuals that students can both see in action and hands-on.
Enhancing the curriculum with the latest technology as well as my knowledge and high spirits will provide an experience like no other!
Math is a very tough subject and most of my students are below grade level, so with the class iPads we can make learning math fun and engaging by using free math apps and games as new ways to learning old material without feeling discouraged. I want to make learning fun and exciting for all my students, however, it is discouraging when they feel that no one cares about their education and making sure they have what they need to both strengthen and challenge their learning. The in-class tablets are what I need to assist my students in becoming all that they can be in this generation of technology. Many of my students can’t afford the latest and greatest, so your generous donations will give them hope that they can succeed!
