My students need 2 iPads to be used by middle school general music students in centers as they compose music, select music to be played on guitars, and practice the guitar.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have been a general music teacher in a metropolitan school district for 13 years, and for the past 4 years I have been fortunate to teach at a middle school. I am excited to provide students with opportunities to express themselves through music at this challenging and critical age when students have so much potential, creativity, and curiosity.
I am dedicated to teaching and to providing my students with opportunities to create, compose, and improvise on classroom instruments and using technology.
In my general music classes I teach over 950 students a year. Students are in grades 6-8, and range in age from 11-15 years old. Ninety-seven percent of the student population identifies as Hispanic, and ninety-eight percent of the student population is low income. Students participate in musical activities ranging from electronic composition, performing, improvising, and composing on guitars and ukuleles, to world percussion where students learn to play music from the Caribbean and Africa.
My Project
I incorporate technology including iPads into my music classroom often so students are able to compose music electronically, research genres of music and musicians, and practice chords with the assistance of online apps. I am limited because my school of 960 students has few iPads. In this project I am requesting two iPads which will become the property of the music room, and will be used in center activities in the music room.
In this center students will use the iPads to research songs of their choice, compose music using Garageband, and students will perform songs on the guitar learned with the assistance of the iPad.
Centers are a valuable tool in education because they provide time for students to explore curriculum while working in small groups around a specific topic. Students will use the iPads in centers in a variety of ways. Students will research guitar songs by ability level and chords using an app, and locate a song they would like to perform. The students will eventually perform their song selections for classmates. Students will also learn additional chords and strumming styles using an app loaded on to the ipad, and in turn teach that to a partner in the center. This project will enhance the classroom environment for students by providing student choice and autonomy in learning and performing. Thank you for your donation to this project and helping students become more independent musicians!
