I'm a digital immigrant teaching 20 digital natives every day. I'm someone who was brought up before the widespread use of digital technology, and my 20 cute little boys and girls are growing up during the age of digital technology. It's my job to provide them access to the tools they need to succeed.
My 20 first graders grow and learn with me at the foot of a beautiful mountain range, surrounded by lush green foliage at a K-6 elementary school nestled in a very supportive neighborhood community.
My students come from different backgrounds and have had varied life experiences. They come to a school where academic excellence, creativity and a love of the outdoors are rooted.
The teachers at this school put in long hours, spend their own money and sacrifice their family time to be the best possible educators they can be. The parent community is very supportive and appreciative of everything we do. Our population has changed and continues to change, year by year. There is much diversity and socioeconomic difference among our 400+ kids, and we notice and adapt to it. There is no place I'd rather make a difference in children's lives!
My Project
My students need 3 iPad minis and 4 durable protective cases. IPads are tools that my students can use for learning, practicing, improving, creating and sharing reading, writing, math, science, social studies and handwriting skills and concepts. IPads are tools that appeal to the many different learning styles that make up my group of first graders. IPads are tools that allows independent practice and work which, in turn, allows me the teacher to meet with small groups of students thereby having a greater impact and providing more benefit to the individual needs of each and every one of my students. IPads are essential in this day and age because of all of the curricular demands placed on teachers.
Having iPads in my classroom will benefit both my students and me.
It will be a win-win situation. My students will be excited and more motivated to play math games, record their reading fluency, watch science videos, practice their handwriting, compose original stories and complete many, many other activities. Giving a small number of students access to a few iPads at a time will allow me to teach reading and math in small groups and provide more targeted instruction and attention to my students' individual needs.
