Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Children. Young minds. Eager to learn. These are my students. Every single one of them showing up to school every day in the care of their teachers. Every parent's most prized possession in my care. It is my mission to give each one of these students the opportunity to the richest education possible. But this is not always as easy as one would hope. This year will be my first year teaching Science exclusively to all third, fourth and fifth graders in my school and the first year of a new curriculum across all of NYC.
I teach approximately 400 students weekly, and it is my duty to engage and challenge each student to reach their highest potential while having fun!
The neighborhood that my school is located in is diverse with many different nationalities, languages, cultures, learning differences and needs. We are classified as a Title 1 school which provides supplemental funds to school districts and assists schools with the highest student concentrations of poverty to meet school educational goals. Students in my school range in levels of abilities, many of them being English Language Learners as well as having learning disabilities.
My Project
This school year will be my first year teaching science to all the students in grades 3, 4, and 5 in my school. I am currently being trained using a brand new curriculum that aligns to the Next Generation Science Standards, Amplify Science. This program is exciting, new and will surely engage all the students, however there is a heavy online component, and we do not have the technology to support it.
My mini-scientists need iPads so they can work in groups on an online simulator to conduct investigations and experiments that cannot physically be done in the classroom.
They deserve to have the full science experience just like all other students around the city with the advantage of laptops and iPads.
Your help is greatly needed and will enhance the learning experience of over 400 students. I am grateful for the time you have taken to read our story. We thank you.
