My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, and 35% of the school population are economically disadvantaged. With the current situation our country is facing with the pandemic, many of my students have been affected in some way. Many of my students' parents have been laid off from work and are now facing serious issues in the home.
As wonderful as it is to be with my students face to face during the school day and having them engage in physical activity during PE, this is a completely different situation.
Trying to find creative ways to have my students continue to be active physically from a distance is extremely frustrating. I am looking for ways to continue to be the inspiration in their lives to have them continue with good health and fitness.
My Project
Closing schools for such a long time is a tremendous challenge. This is a situation that none of us have experienced before and this has been a difficult time for everyone as we have had to adjust to many aspects in learning.
Despite the uncertainty, I am fortunate that the PE teachers at my school are quite forward-thinking and keen to involve mobile technology into our lessons as we share the belief that the iPad and the available sports apps have huge potential for improving student outcomes.
Having an apple pen to use for an iPad Pro that was just funded will enable the students to choose apps into our PE curriculum. My students will be able to search for different apps such as: Slo Pro, Coach my Video, and Ubersense. Slo Pro is a great app that allows you to record up to 1000 fps and play back your video at super slow motion, which means that you can play sections of your video back and changing speeds. The student were able to use this app with minimal support, the interface is simple and intuitive and the app works as described. Coach my video also allowed the students to record and play back their videos on slow motion and with frame by frame accuracy. It also allows the user to draw lines, shapes, and calculate angles on top of the video recording. This made analyzing skills much easier as students were able to highlight areas of their technique that require practice. Lastly. Ubersense allows students to record audio reflection or commentary of their videos. In addition to my project, fans can naturally ventilate a room, cooling the room temperature while conserving energy, which will help my students to be more comfortable while working out.
