Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We have all seen how intuitive the iPad can be for students. It is also an incredible learning tool. The problem is, my students rarely, if ever, get to use one.
I teach a bilingual classroom here in Texas.
My school has a very diverse population. We have some students who are middle-income and many who are low-income. The students in my room are all low-income, but they have a ton of potential and they really love learning. I am concerned for them in the future. The community where most of them live is full of high school dropouts, gangs, drug use, and teen pregnancy. I am hoping that we can give them the foundation they need during their elementary years to make them strong for the future. Many of them are academically very low right now, but I know this will help to give them a boost.
My Project
In my classroom, we have 25 students and 2 iPads that the district bought us. I think this a wonderful resource, but unfortunately, if we take turns using them, students will only see the iPad once every 2 weeks. I have been finding great apps to download that really give students motivation to learn. It could be something as simple as learning math facts or as complicated as the periodic table, but students are really, really motivated by the games and programs on the tablet. I would implement the iPads through centers and throughout the day. Students could get access to it at least once a week, if not more.
I hope you will understand that my students could really make great gains from a resource like this.
They are a really special group, and they need tools to boost them. Our goal is to close achievement gaps and help them learn on the same level as their more affluent peers. Please help in that mission.
