My students need iPads to promote different learning styles. It will supplement literacy, mathematics and communication, as most students are nonverbal.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Never have the words "Actions Speak Louder Than Words" been so true to me until now. My students typically point, gesture, and make close approximations of words to communicate. I observe much potential and willingness to learn in their actions. The requested iPads can be their voice to their actions, wants and needs.
My students consist of 7 girls and 5 boys in transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, first and second grade that need high interest activities to remain engaged.
Having multi-modal instruction is crucial since they are students with special needs and require individualized activities. Our classroom is a MMR - SDC setting with students' eligibility of Autism and Intellectual Delayed. Students are thirsty for knowledge and it is my ultimate goal to reveal the best way in which they learn best. My school is very supportive but financially unable to assist in purchases of our materials that'll better suit the students.
My Project
Ever wonder what a MMR SDC Schedule looks like? Due to the high demand of high interest activities in order to keep students engaged, students can typically stay within an activity for 15 minutes maximum. That means that the majority of the time, class is run in centers; whole class for 15 minutes then 3 rotating centers, 15 minutes each. Students will be able to experience different subjects by interactively engaging in applications on the iPad that further supplement lessons. I envision the usage of these iPads as a form of communication that students will be able to utilize. Text to speech functions, electronic books, communication boards, are all but a few assets that'll help expand on their language.
"How can I best help you help your child?" I'll never forget the response from one parent.
"I just want him to be able to stay in an activity for more than five minutes". Well that can be accomplished. All students and even more so students with special needs are gravitated towards technology. iPads are easily navigated and easy to use with little guidance. Students are magnetized towards technology and having iPads as an incentive will be a great educational motivation to complete tasks.
