Access to technology should be available to all students! In our ever advancing world, students in this generation need to be technologically literate. Right now, my students only have access to two iPads that are shared during class between my students.
Five years ago, when our school was deemed a Level 4 Turnaround School, we had to get rid of both of our computer labs to make room for the various interventionists hired to help us turn our school around.
My students CRAVE being able to use technology and I feel guilty that I don't have the means to provide it adequately for 25 students. Soon, my students are going to be expected to take the PARCC on a computer and many spend less than 60 minutes on a computer/tablet a week.
I have the brightest, funniest, kindest, and most genuine students in the city. I enjoy seeing my students everyday and love going to work everyday. They keep me on my toes and love to learn which makes my job "easy". All students at my school receive free breakfast, lunch, and after-school programming. We are a Level 4 Turnaround School and an Arts Turnaround School.
My Project
Doing math on paper or whiteboards gets really boring for my students. Being proficient with technology is a life skill that I think every college bound student should have and my school doesn't have the means to provide that and a skill needed now for standardized testing. Since each and every one of my students are taking these tests and are college bound I feel like I need to take it upon myself to help fix this problem! I am requesting 2 iPad minis. I know that being able to have students take advantage of the amazing math apps available on the iPads will ensure students stay excited about their learning and be able to apply their math skills in multiple ways. Whether they are playing strategy games like "Set"/ "Allowance" or practicing skills with "Squeebles Fractions"/ "Operation Math Code Squad" I know that students will be excited to practice and apply skills. I also know that I will be able to better differentiate instruction to ALL of my students as the iPad can be utilized in group work.
Donations to this project will really make a difference building technological literacy AND the math skills of my 5th graders.
They deserve to have the same access to technology of their suburban peers and an opportunity to have their education personalized and differentiated. I know that my students will definitely appreciate the opportunity to use the iPads to further their learning and I also know that with more access to technology my students will be better equipped for PARCC as well!
