My students need 4 iPads for their literacy/language learning. Through ease of portability and access to information, these iPads will allow my second graders to access Mandarin language apps, dictionaries, and digital interactive books.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This is a 2nd grade dual language (English-Mandarin) class of about 23 students in District 1 in Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York City. Most of my students come from low-income families and my school is a Title I school. Many of them receive free lunch based on their socioeconomic status.
Despite the many challenges they face, such as little food at home, my students are always so smiley, so kind, thoughtful, and so generous.
They will save their snacks and surprise me by leaving snacks such as an apple, a banana, or a pack of cranberries on my desk! Their words, "You need brain food!" make my heart melt! They are intelligent, fun loving, creative, and spontaneous.
I am looking to provide my students with hands-on, fun, and meaningful learning experiences. I need your help to make that possible.
My Project
These 4 iPads will allow my 23 students to share and access information and apps for our new literacy learning. Our students will not have to sit in front of a computer, but will be free to move around and learn using these iPads.
Through the use of these iPads and integrating digital technologies into literacy instruction, my students will be equipped with the new literacy skills needed for reading, writing and communicating in the current digital environment.
With the iPads, my students can collaborate and use apps such as Moo-0 for group story telling and readers' theater. They can also access digital interactive books to read and access different dictionaries to learn more about word meanings. They will also be able to attach voice recordings and create iMovies. These iPads will be very useful tools for my ESL and Mandarin foreign language learners to use.
