Being the Media Specialist, one of my main responsibilities is to address the needs of the "whole child" and treat every student holistically. My students come with varying needs, and over 90% belong to impoverished homes. Their diverse cultures, needs, and experiences mean that one size does not fit all when it comes to guidance and counseling.
Due to their parents' economic status being impacted by the COVID pandemic, and the fact that these children attend a Title I school where resources are limited, basic needs such as access to technology and school supplies are always ongoing issues.
At my school, I wear many hats and I facilitate a vast diversity of students' and teachers' needs alike. As the media specialist, I take a very active role in my students' literacy needs, especially when it comes to ensuring that each child that comes to me has equal access to a mobile device.
My Project
In my school, there are students that I serve who have various special needs as well as multiple learning styles. Because of the learning challenges they face, we have to find ways to accommodate each child. Issues that relate to learning styles sometimes require that these students use touch screen computers as they would grasp concepts and retain knowledge longer and easier.
In March of 2020, we were abruptly changed to a virtual and remote style of teaching and learning, which was a struggle in itself for everyone.
Now that we will be testing virtually at the end of the school year, some of my students share the nightmare of crashing and outdated computers and not having a reliable device to test on.
We are requesting one Apple iPad that has a built-in camera and microphone that can be used seamlessly for students to remotely complete assignments and take online tests.
