My students are "rookies in reading". They are the students that have been identified as reading below grade level expectations, some diagnosed dyslexic, that require Tier 3 intervention. With English having 1,120 ways to create 44 sounds, it's my job to help them decipher all that comes with reading!

My Project
iPads can be used in several ways as an instructional tool to support the teaching of literacy in an early childhood (K-2) environment. The students can connect reading, writing, listening, and speaking (especially our English language learners) when they engage in different apps on an iPad. For example, Magnetic ABC's, allows students to manipulate the letters on the screen to practice spelling their name, their friends names, and other print they find around them.
The five essential elements of reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension can all be reinforced when a student picks up an iPad and begins to explore the applications on the device.
Due to Covid-19, the iPads I had in my classroom that I used on a weekly basis with students were handed out to families that needed technology at home to engage in virtual learning. Many of our students have not returned to in-person learning so the iPads are still being utilized at their homes. Unfortunately, that has left my classroom without any iPads to use as an instructional tool.
