Every morning we start our day with a high energy morning meeting and a "brain break." As our day progresses, students learn though Whole Brain Teaching techniques that are an integral part to their learning and reach every type of learner.
My students are second graders who are at a variety of levels in reading, math and writing.
They are one of the most amazing classes I have had in my three years of teaching. Each student is eager to learn when they arrive at school and this eagerness has brought a new joy to teaching for me. Their eagerness has also allowed us to create some amazing projects using the tools we do have in our classroom. I have also been able to try a lot of new Whole Brain Teaching techniques with this class, again thanks to their love of learning.
My Project
Currently, my classroom is one of the few rooms without any tablets for students to use. I let students occasionally use my personal iPad, but other than the occasional exposure, some students never get to use tablets. If we had iPads my students would be able to use them in SO many ways! They could create blog posts for our weebly classroom website using the weebly app. Students could practice sight words using the variety of sight word apps. Students could read on the iPads. Students could practice math skills using a variety of math apps such as Splash Math. Students who struggle to write could brainstorm and even write stories using voice to text apps such as Dragon Dictation. In addition to all these educational opportunities, student engagement will increase, which is something I have already seen when students are given the opportunity to use my personal iPad during the school day. The possibilities we would have with classroom iPads are truly endless!
Students today are growing up in an age of technology.
My students are in a generation that has never experienced life without technology. The benefits they will have thanks to technology within their lifetime are beyond our imaginations. As my students grow up, they will need to know how to use technology as well as the benefits of technology. The more technology they are exposed to in school, the more knowledge they will have and the more aware of the benefits of technology they will be.
