My students have music only once a week for 45 minutes, and only for half the school year, so it is crucial that I make those precious minutes of music learning as meaningful and powerful as they possibly can be. I am eager to help my students to grow in their musicality; the sky’s the limit!
Music can and should be an avenue for my students to express themselves, focus on being creative and let go of some of their worries for a while.
Many of my students speak Spanish as their first language, although some come from as far away as Nepal. A significant percentage of the student population is learning to speak English, while still being held to high standards of learning and achievement in primarily English-based curricula. Music should also bolster their self esteem and help them to feel more positive about coming to school; in order for that to happen, I need to help my students make personal connections to music class, to make music learning worth a lot to them. I hope that if they know people are investing in their music success, they will value music class.

PreSchool students at my school LOVE music class, and I love them! It's time to bring their music education in to the 21st century by putting some technology in their hands.
There are so many great music apps for this age group, like 123 Kids Fun Music, Mussila, and Kids Music Factory.
As digital natives, my PreK's learn best from the wealth of educational music apps when they can use the technology themselves, hands-on. Using iPads in music class will introduce my students to composing, form, ear training, instrument recognition, music theory... the list is endless! The key is, they will learn and experience these concepts through interactive programs designed for young learners.
