All of my students are members of a general education classroom, ranging from grades K-5. As a full-inclusion teacher for students with moderate to severe disabilities, my students are learning to self-advocate, persevere, and build deep and meaningful relationships with their peers everyday.
All means ALL.
Our school has built a beautiful school culture that embraces students and families of all ages, ethnicities, socio-economic backgrounds, and ability levels. Because of this, my students have the opportunity to develop deep and meaningful relationships with their typical developing peers and are members first and foremost, of their general education classroom.
My Project
Many of my students have difficulty accessing grade-level content in the general education classroom. Last year, I was able to purchase several assistive technology apps for writing composition, and reading, in addition to educational apps to assist them with learning letter identification, number identification, math fact fluency. This made a huge impact in the motivation, willingness to persevere, and interest the students showed in learning new skills.
Receiving additional iPads will increase access to assistive technology tools and other educational apps within the general education classroom allowing my students to become more independent in their learning.
For example, for students who have difficulty with writing due to developing fine motor skills, the assistive technology app Clicker Sentences, allows the teacher to preload a word bank with vocabulary words, sight words, or sentence frames so the student can compose written works by clicking the words to put them in order. Reflex Math is an educational app I received through a grant that helps students learn math fact fluency. My students earn reflex time during the day and then can log on at home to continue practice! I have seen so much growth in the speed of recognition and quantity of facts recognized.
Having iPads as tools to assist my students in accessing education is so vital to their success. I am hoping Chevron will help Fuel my School to help level the learning field for my students and provide them the opportunity to share their academic and social successes outside of the classroom.
