My Project
I am a Special Education teacher in a school that is specialized to serve students with various needs, including Autism. This year I’ve been blessed to teach a 6:1:1 class with the most incredible, curious, fun-loving and energetic 4th graders! Each of my students have a range of abilities and learn in many different, unique ways. Most of my students are non-verbal, and require various supports to be successful in their learning. They have communication, sensory, fine/gross motor and processing needs. They are more focused and excited about learning if the activities and materials are highly engaging. They are particularly engaged in interactive activities. Technology, like iPads would be a great asset in our room.
My students not only thrive with technology, they also benefit from focused spaces to learn with tools to increase independence.
A classroom divider and timer that will help in providing my students with routine and focused space to learn. There are also times where students may need privacy or a quiet, calm space within the classroom. The divider will allow us to have the means to provide areas where students can complete their work, regulate their emotions, and be focused. Since the divider is portable, it can easily be moved around the room depending on the individual needs of the students throughout the day. A visual timer will help students self-regulation skills, ease transitions, increase confidence and independence.
