My Students

I am passionate about teaching the Social Studies curriculum to all my classes. However, my ultimate goal is to engage my students and awaken their curiosity and analytical minds through the content information so that my students can apply what they learn to real life and contemporary issues.

Although my school is located in a low socio-economic urban community, our school is a warm and inviting place or students to be.

My students are such wonderful students. They are so eager to learn. They adhere to classroom rules and generally stay on task. However, as everyone knows, students today are under enormous pressure. The expectations set for students today is very high. Every year, students in my school are expected to reach the NYS goals for their grade regardless of the challenges that they face due to their circumstances. Many of my students have economic challenges and lack parental support. As a teacher, it is frustrating to know that many of your students are at a disadvantage, but must still meet their state standards and expectations. The reality is that not all students have a computer at home. I also have students with IEPs and English Language Learners. These students are very receptive to learning content information through technology.

My Project

In every class I teach, there are some children with special learning needs. For instance, our school's English Language Learners population is increasing every year. These students struggle with understanding the English language and often they do not understand what I am saying. I believe that these children would benefit more from working on an iPad on academic programs that meet them at their academic level. There are many English Language Learner iPad applications like Imagine Leaning, Interactive Grammar of English, My WordBook 2, Sounds The Pronunciation App, Google Translate and Newsy. In addition to a growing ELL population in my school, I also teach special education classes and inclusion classes. In these classes, students have Individual Education Plans. Some of these students have behavioral or academic challenges. However, I have noticed that ELLs and students with IEPs love technology and often beg me for computer time.

Having these iPads would help those ELLs and students with IEPs that are well below grade level, have behavioral problem and/or have recently entered the U.S.

to not be left behind. While I teach the planned lesson, these students would be able to get academic support by using translator, social studies and/or basic grammar applications to further their academic knowledge in a less intimidating and enjoyable manner. I would also be able to easily carry the iPads as I visit the classrooms.
