My Students
Many of my students are bright, creative young adults whose various disabilities often prevent them from sharing all that they have to offer. My exciting job is to find ways to make it possible for them to reach their maximum potential in both academic and community settings.
The students that I work with vary in age and diagnosis.
They can be anywhere from 14-21 years of age and are diagnosed with autism and other developmental and learning delays. Our students are also being taught how to become a vital part of their local community while still engaging in academics. Often their days include going to vocational sites and being integrated within the community to prepare them for adulthood. They are in a special education program geared toward addressing their special needs related to their communication and learning deficits. Our program is located on the grounds of a much larger NYC general education public high school.
My Project
Our occupational therapy department does not currently include student friendly technology such as iPads, however, I am so eager to begin using an iPad to help my students overcome their communication and learning difficulties. An iPad with WiFi capabilities will help them learn how to do research on the Internet, learn how to access public transportation and information, look up available jobs, and engage in age appropriate leisure and therapeutic activities. It is my job to help prepare these students for the next phase of their life- adulthood. It is so necessary nowadays for young adults to be versed in technology. In addition, I am aware of many wonderful apps such as "Sentence Builder" and "Go Talk Now," which will enable my bright, creative students to express themselves in ways that they may have never thought possible. I am so excited to see what comes out of them when they have an alternate means to express themselves.
With all that an iPad has to offer my students lives will change for the better in so many ways!
As is always the case with technology, an iPad will open doors to a new world where they are able to overcome all the challenges related to their disability. It is my hope to use the iPad to help level the playing field for them to succeed as bright young adults in their communities.
