This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students from my ICT class live in a very poor, urban neighborhood with mostly immigrant families who speak little to no English at home. So, in addition to having students with learning disabilities, the majority of our students are also ESL learners. This makes gauging their interest in both reading and writing difficult to say the least.
Many students in our class do not have computers or iPads at home to access the internet and use educational programs that the school has paid subscriptions to.
As our students continue to grow up in this digital age of technology it is more important than ever that we give them access to technology at an early age so that they are on the same playing field as children who are growing up with more advantages than they are.
My Project
Our students need an iPad for classroom use to become authors of digital books!
Our first grade students aren't very motivated when it comes to writing stories by hand.
Recently, when shown a project on digital fairytale stories done by another class, our students all of a sudden got very excited to create their own!
We are looking to add more iPads to our classroom so we can use the apps Book creator, seesaw, and Toontastic for our students to create their own stories in Ebook form. These digital publishing apps are much more appealing and exciting to our students who have special needs and writing is a struggle for them.
