This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many people remember learning to read in kindergarten, but do you remember learning to write. Writing is very challenging for many of us as adults can you imagine what it would be like for our 4-5 year olds in kindergarten and transitional kindergarten.
My students live in an impoverished area of Los Angeles.
All of our students grades pre-school to sixth grade receive a free lunch. We are a brand new school with very limited resources. We have a beautiful campus but no technology for our students besides one desktop computer.
My Project
Currently my first grade students have reading buddies that read to them and motivate them to be avid readers. They discuss their books and help them read. This partnership has really motivated my students to become better readers. They can't wait to show off their new skills week after week and discuss their books. I would like to build a partnership with our transitional kindergartens and our kindergarten students in writing. My first graders have begun writing awesome narratives that they share with each other. Sharing is fueling the passion my students have for writing. This motivates them to write more and more and try harder when they are writing difficult words. Having iPads to publish their writing will fuel their writing even further.
These materials will allow them to publish their writing and share with others.
We can have the transitional kindergarten and kindergarteners do the same. Periodically we can read each others writing and celebrate each others accomplishments. My students can become coaches for these younger authors and guide them through the process from prewrite to publishing. The iPads will make it easy to manage this partnership since they can be transported from student to student and classroom to classroom.
