My Students
Our inner city students come from various backgrounds, where English is not always their native language. They come to school wanting to learn and work hard because school is the safest place for a lot of them. We are a Title I school where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
When working in the Discovery Lab, it’s about applying creative thinking and design skills to transform our STEM projects to STEAM projects, encouraging students to imagine all the possibilities when their creative thinking meshes with engineering.
Going from a STEM school to a STEAM school is an important transition to show students the role art plays not only in the design process, but in everyday life throughout our world. It's also about engagement.
When students enter my lab, excitement builds because they know they have challenges that they need to face like engineers, scientists, and many other creative professionals do in the real world. Students love working with their hands to create something or solve a problem. Our school is a wonderful place to learn because of the environment created by the staff. We show our love of learning to our students.
My Project
A day in the life of a student at our inner city school always involves technology! We love designing video games with Bloxels, building and programming robots with Lego WeDo Robotics 2.0, advanced robotics with Lego EV3 Robots, coding with Ozobots, programming with Dash and Dot robots, and documenting all parts of the process of engineering and design process using apps such as Slow Pro, our Go Pro, and the camera. When the iPads are not being used in the lab, other teachers borrow them to use for apps such as Reflex Math, Dreambox Math, Gizmos Math & Science simulations, just to name a few!
For the coming school year, our classes will all be packed with 27 students in each grade, which means we will not have enough iPads for our class to use.
For all of this exciting curriculum to happen in the lab, we need access to more iPads. The programming and coding can only take place when we have a device to complete it! Help us have enough materials to support the amazing learning that goes on in our classrooms on a daily basis!
