My Students

As a kindergarten teacher in a low income, high poverty school district, I get to spend my days with twenty joyful and energetic five-year-olds who, despite the challenges they face, arrive at school optimistic and eager to learn.

My responsibility is to provide them with a myriad of opportunities for engagement and growth.

My students are curious about the outside world and many have never left this city. I want to bring the world to them through the vast technologies available and help them expand their own worlds with new skills and learning adventures.

My Project

As technology dominates our lives, learning basic computer programming is an essential skill for children. Every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science. One of the challenges my students face is that most of them do not have access to the technology hardware and software needed for early computer science instruction. Starting as kindergarteners, my pre- and emergent readers will have the benefit of exposure to the elements of basic computer programming, i.e., counting, sequencing, estimating, cause and effect and left-to-right hand and eye coordination to enhance problem-solving and critical thinking skills, logic, creativity and perseverance. With the help of DonorsChoose.org my students will use these requested iPads to explore coding apps and websites recommended by ed tech leaders, such as Hopscotch, Daisy the Dinosaur and Cargo-Bot.

They can use Osmo Genius kits and Osmo Coding sets to have fun learning to be creators, as well as consumers, of technology and build a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path they choose.

Through the generosity of DonorsChoose.org I look forward to welcoming my kindergarteners to a new STEM center for all the coding adventures that await them.
