This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine living in a studio apartment as a family of 4 or more. Each day many of students come to school from this type of home. They are eager to learn and are entranced by technology!
Our school is located in a low-income, high poverty area that is predominantly Spanish-speaking.
It is an area in which violence occurs daily and its proximity to oil refineries cause health issues. Our school is a place where the children can come and know that they are safe and protected. We strive to give them a place where they can learn without worry or fear. We are lucky to have Breakfast in the Classroom program ,which feeds our children breakfast in addition to the free lunch offered to every child in our school. Even though the students in my class live in this type of environment they come to school excited to learn and love to get time to explore exciting new materials!
My Project
My students need iPads to give them the opportunity to learn through modern technology. My students would be able to practice quite a few skills through the huge range of apps available. They could practice letter formation and letter sounds (beginning, middle and end). They could put sounds together to make words...helping them in reading and writing! In math they could use apps that help them learn number sense and problem solving skills or shape identification. The possibility is ENDLESS with so many apps available to teach every single subject!
I sincerely feel that these iPads will motivate my students to want to learn more, most especially in a way that is modern and not the usual paper and pencil method.
It will give them experience with technology that they will need to be college and career ready!
