My students love using technology in the classroom. Last year I had a Smartboard installed towards the end of the year and it was amazing to see the change in students interests for learning when called to use it. Both ESOL and Regular Ed students all want to interact with technology every day!
My school is in a low-income area with a high ESOL population.
I specifically teach 2nd grade with ESOL students who are beginners, Special Ed students who don't know their alphabet, and Regular Ed students reading anywhere from Kindergarten levels to 3rd grade levels.
Many students knew no English just two years ago and now are just about at level. They all want to learn and have fun doing it. Technology of all sorts seems to be the way to go.
My Project
The iPad minis will help my students to access information and learn new skills not currently available to them due to outdated technology. This will also provide individualized instruction because applications can be customized to meet student needs.
Many of the students in my classroom are reading below grade level and need research based interventions, such as Lexia, to help reach their grade level. Many of my students also struggle with math and the iPads will allow my students to receive math based interventions, such as First In Math, to help them meet their deficiencies. The simplicity of the touch interface is making the iPad an extremely popular device for students with special needs.
The iPads will transform our current technology and classroom from a teacher-driven model to a student-driven model, where the student is an active participant in their own learning in a community of learners.
Students will be able to read and become better mathematicians with these new iPad minis. Please help us receive these much needed iPads. I appreciate your time and hope you can help our future leaders.
