My students need an iPad to be able to input data and decrease the amount of materials they must carry as well as save on paper while we in the field doing research.
Computers are engaging, fun and motivating for students. I want my students to feel like they are real scientists as they complete environmental research studies around the school using equipment that scientists use such as an iPad.
My students live in rural South Carolina where many of the industries have closed around the area.
Their career choices and chances of a livelihood in this area are dwindling. 72% of my students are on free and reduced lunch but they do not complain and continue to put forth effort in school to learn. They are inspired and engaged by gadgets and want to manipulate everything they touch. The more hands-on the learning, the better they retain the information and the more they can recall the knowledge later.
My Project
My students participate in water quality and soil sampling in the surrounding areas. We take clipboards, paper and pencils along with their lab equipment outside to different sites. By the end of the period, the clipboards and papers have dirt all over them and the pencils are broken. I would like students to have the opportunity to input their data into the iPad as they complete their scientific tests. This will eliminate the paper that we take outside and decrease the number of materials we are carrying. This will allow us to make it outside quickly and save time when we get back inside because our data will already be in the computer. In addition, these students will become proficient in using another piece of technology equipment.
My students need every opportunity to use various pieces of technological equipment.
When they go to college I want them to be aware of everything that is available to them and have knowledge of what this equipment can do. Providing students with an iPad will allow them this opportunity.
